Serigraph

Silk-screening, which is also referred to as serigraphy or screen printing, is a centuries-old process that originated in China. It is, in essence, a refined version of a hand stenciled process. The image is divided, as it were, by a color, with a screen corresponding to each shade of ink that will appear on the final surface-paper, canvas, fabric, etc. The ink is applied to a screen, transferring to the paper only through the porous segments. A separate screen must be created for each color. On average, it takes 80 to 100 screens to create a serigraph. The elements are hand-drawn onto Mylar and photographically exposed onto each screen. Inks are matched to the hues of the original and custom mixed.

SERIGRAPHS

The Galisteo Series / The Galisteo Rodeo.

“It’s always hot and dry and dusty. It’s always on Rudy Sena’s ranch, the third week in July. And, you can always count on lots and lots of friendly faces, absolutely no shade and a guaranteed good time. The 360 view is spectacular, the beer is cold, the fiddler is great. It’s the place to go to get some bronco or bull ridin’ under your seat. Mandatory if you’re a young (I do stress “young”) cowboy set on getting into the big-time rodeo circuit. Why, all you gotta do is slap down your entry fee and you can get your own up-close and personal ride from hell. Go for it! But the most striking thing to me is the attitude of the contestants. Behind the chutes the mood is playful, electric, easy, tense, busy, good and natural, respectful and macho all at the same time. I’m blown away every time by the ease and grace of these cowboys just minutes before they climb into those tiny chutes onto the backs of those snorting, kicknin’ wild eyed beasts from hell. That’s what I am trying to capture in these Serigraphs - that confident, calm grace that typifies the mythical qualities that we attach to the old west. Real American Icons. Sometimes we don’t need to wallow in the negative, angry, ugly expressions so often today associated with “reality.” Sometimes what we need is to be uplifted. Cowboys captured in the warm copper-leaf glow of those hot summer, Galisteo rodeo afternoons are uplifting. Enjoy!
